Conference organizers are always trying to make their event have an impact well beyond the actual conference. Ning’s “Make your own social network” product is a good way to do that.

  • Our plan in using Ning is this:
    * To have all the project team in one place so that the Beacon (Online Newspaper), TV, Web and Outreach plus all support can operate asynchronously to link all that we do in real time - we cannot be in an endless meeting
*to enable the project manager to extract the work from what is going on and then play it back to us all
    * to use search vs a taxonomy so that we can always go back and ask - why did we do this?
*to allow CPB and PBS and a number of stations who live in cities that are affected to influence what we do and to learn in real time what works or not - really has the potential to accelerate adoption and planning
    * to allow a number of people in social media who know a lot more than any of us to help in real time
    * to show us by doing how to operate an enterprise using social media as the glue

Thanks for sharing - that's exciting - not only the project itself, but the way you're using tools like Ning to all of the backend and support structure together.
  • Ning is not the only option. You might find smaller companies doing better thing. Check out WackWall
